Must-Visit Museums for This Fall

On those cooler fall days when the weather isn’t cooperating, the perfect escape is to take a stroll around a museum. Here in Metro Detroit, there are many museums to enjoy, and there’s a good chance you haven’t been to all of them. These museums feature science, music, art, and history, and they’re all just a short drive away. Check out these must-visit museums in Detroit this fall. 

DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS

5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit

The Detroit Institute of Arts contains a diverse collection of more than 65,000 works. The museum is free for residents of Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb counties and is open Tuesdays through Sundays. There are always new works to see in their changing exhibitions as well as events including public talks and guided tours.

CHARLES H. WRIGHT MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY

315 East Warren Avenue, Detroit 

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History has dedicated itself to celebrating and exploring the rich cultural legacy of African Americans. Their unique exhibitions showcase the history of African Americans through art, music, and immersion. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday. 

MOTOWN MUSEUM

2648 Berry Gordy Jr. Boulevard, Detroit

The Motown Museum is a Detroit must-visit for Motown and music lovers. Walk through Berry Gordy Jr.’s apartment that he lived in during the label’s earliest days. You’ll get to see the original recording equipment from Studio A and learn all about what happened in Hitsville USA from a knowledgeable tour guide.

MICHIGAN SCIENCE CENTER

5020 John R Street, Detroit

The Michigan Science Center is a great place to spend a day with the family. Your kids will love the hands-on exhibitions as they learn about electricity, technology, and so much more. Michigan Science Center also has a science stage with live science demonstrations, an IMAX theater, and a planetarium. 

DOSSIN GREAT LAKES MUSEUM

100 The Strand, Detroit

Dossin Great Lakes Museum is located on Belle Isle and is dedicated to showcasing the history of the Great Lakes. They place a special emphasis on Detroit’s role in maritime history over a 300-year period. Visitors can see model ships, a pilot house, and a hydroplane while learning about the deep history of the Great Lakes.
